Illustration 1. New fuel cap assembly. The valve assembly should be tightened to a torque of 20 4 N m (15 3 lb ft).To provide vandalism protection for the new fuel cap, fabricate a steel rod 6.4 mm (.25") in diameter similar to the one shown in Illustration 2.
Applying heat to fuel tanks, even when "empty" can result in residual fuel or vapor igniting with explosive force. This can result in injury or death. Do not weld or flame cut on any fuel tank without taking the proper safety precautions. See the reference article.
