(1) Groove in new cylinder rod (2) Approximate outline of earlier cylinder rodAdaptable To: The new 171-1232 Hoist Cylinder is a direct replacement for former 180-4327 Hoist Cylinder. The new hoist cylinder is effective with the following models: 777D (S/N: AGC410-UP) and 777D HAA (S/N: AGY1-UP). The 171-1232 Hoist Cylinder is adaptable to earlier models.The 180-4327 Hoist Cylinder can be reworked in order to improve the service life of the cylinder. The rework involves adding two bars to each cylinder. The bars serve as a positive stop. The bars prevent the shoulder of the rod from compacting foreign matter into the seal.Note: If one hoist cylinder is reworked, BOTH hoist cylinders must be reworked. Do not rework only one cylinder for a machine.Use the following information to install parts on the existing cylinders.

(A) Weld width 9.5 mm (0.38 inch) (3) Fabricated bars
Fabricate four bars (3). Use SAE 1020 carbon steel bar stock. Each bar must be 19.0 mm (0.75 inch) square. Each bar must be 140.0 mm (5.50 inch) long.
Install two bars (3) to each cylinder rod. Secure the bars with a continuous 9.5 mm (0.38 inch) fillet weld. Use an arc welder and E7018 welding rod. For the correct procedures, refer to Special Publications, SEBD0512, "Caterpillar Service Welding Guide".Note: Protect the surface of the rod and the seal from weld splatter.
