(13) Clearance (14) Make the bridge
Insert boom boss pin (9) into the holes of the fixed bracket assembly (3). The bracket assembly comes with the finished pin bore. By using a lifting sling and a hoist, position the bracket assembly to the cut end of the Boom Nose .
Insert the bar (16) into PT2.
Put the bracket assembly (3) in a position so that the distance from the center of the boom boss pin (9) to the center of PT3 is 2710 5 mm (106.7 0.2 inch).
Check the boom boss pin (9) at PT4 and the bar (16) at PT2 for alignment from the backside of the boom. Use the level gauge to ensure pin alignment. Refer to Illustration 13.
Make the bridge between the 101-2127 Plate and the Boom Nose with tack welds, if the clearance is greater than 2 mm (0.08 inch). Refer to Illustration 14.
After the pin and bar are aligned and properly adjusted, perform tack welding on each groove.
Check the alignment of the pin and bar after each tack weld. Make adjustments with the pins if the alignment is not correct.Welding Procedures

Weld the top plate from Point M to Point N. Refer to Illustration 17 and Detail G in Illustration 16.
Weld the bottom plate from Point M to Point N. Refer to Illustration 17 and Detail J in 16.
Weld the side plate from Point A to Point D. Refer to Illustration 15 and Section H in Illustration 16.
Weld the groove of the Boom Nose from Point A to Point B and Point C to Point D. Refer to Illustration 15 and View E in Illustration 16.Note: Before welding, the root gap of the V groove should be a minimum of 3 mm (0.1 inch), 4 to 6 mm (0.2 to 0.4 inch), if possible.Note: Dry the welding wire per the specifications before starting the welding procedure. Grind the weld until the top face is flush with both plates. Remove the portion (15) that is crosshatched from a butt weld.
Prepare the boom for painting. Refer to "Painting and Coating the Boom" for additional information.Painting and Coating the Boom
Stress relieve the welds by needle peening. A wire brush or a grinder can be used to clean the welded area.
Use Caterpillar authorized paint on the welds and reinforcement plates.
Cover all the bores, threaded holes, and cylinder rods before painting.
