Fluid Spillage Containment
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to "Tools And Shop Products Guide", NENG2500 for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines. Dispose of fluids according to local regulations and mandates. 1. Use Tool (A) to remove two engine oil filters (1). 2. Remove bolts (2) that hold the engine oil filter base to the cylinder block.3. Remove the engine oil filter base. 4. Remove O-ring seals (3) from the engine oil filter base.
There is spring force against cover (4). When the bolts that hold the cover in position are removed, the spring force will be released. To prevent possible personal injury, hold the cover in position as the bolts which hold it are slowly removed.
5. While holding cover (4) in position, slowly remove the two bolts and the washers that hold it. Remove cover (4) and the gasket. 6. Remove spring (5) and plunger (6) from the engine oil filter base. 7. Remove studs (7) from the engine oil filter base if necessary. The following steps are for the installation of the engine oil filters & engine oil filter base. 8. If studs (7) were removed from the engine oil filter base, reinstall them. Put 4C-4032 Thread Lock on the threads at the base end of each stud. Install the studs in the engine oil filter base, and tighten each one to a torque of 80 15 N m (60 11 lb ft).9. Check the condition of the gasket used under cover (4). If the gasket is worn of damaged, use a new part for replacement. 10. Put clean engine oil on plunger (6) and spring (5). Install the plunger and spring in the engine oil filter base. 11. Install the gasket and cover (4) on the engine oil filter base. 12. Check the condition of O-ring seals (3). If the seals are worn or damaged, use new parts for replacement. Install O-ring seals (3) in the engine oil filter base. 13. Put the engine oil filter base in position on the cylinder block and install bolts (2) that hold it.14. Install two engine oil filters (1). Apply clean engine oil to the filter gasket and tighten the engine oil filters 3/4 turn after the filter gasket contacts the base.
