(2) ConnectorJ2 Decisions are made by the circuits in the ECM. Software in the ECM activate the electronic circuits in the appropriate way to correctly operate the machine. Connectors join the harness wiring to the inputs and outputs of the ECM. There are two connectors with 70 contacts. Complete diagnostic codes are available with CAT ET.The ECM monitors the condition of the machine for Proper system operation. Components sense the condition of the machine. Components then send electrical signals to the inputs of the ECM. The ECM compares the information from the inputs to the stored information. The ECM then decides if outputs should be activated. The activation is performed by sending electrical signals through the outputs to an electronic circuit.Inputs
Numerous inputs from the ECM monitor the machine's condition. Two types of inputs exist. One type of input is the switch input. The other input device is a sensor. Switches and harness wiring provide signals to the switch inputs of the ECM. Including open circuit, short to + battery and short to ground. Sensors provide a constantly changing signal to the sensor input of the ECM.Outputs
The ECM responds to decisions by sending electrical signals through various outputs. The outputs can cause one of the items that follow.

The J1939 data link is required for communication with other ECMs as well as instrument clusters and other devices that use this communications protocol. The data link is bidirectional.
