There have been a number of isolated instances of issues with coolant or oil loss due to leaks past the 225-8019 Gasket on 3054C, 3054E, C4.4 and C6.6 engines.The issues have been found from the following causes.
There has been corrosion between the water pump and the gasket. This is affected by poor maintenance practices and uneven distribution of preservative on the face of the water pump. This causes leaks to develop over time.
There is evidence of a chemical reaction on the gasket. The chemical reaction is caused by the coolant. This may be due to incorrect fluids. This may be due to incorrect maintenance of the fluid. This results in the reduction of the sealing capability of the material and leaks to occur over a period of time.
A new gasket must be used on installation of the water pump. The surfaces of the water pump must be clean and free from any corrosion.Refer to Caterpillar Commercial Diesel Engine Fluids Recommendations, SEBU6251 for the correct types of fluids.Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual for the maintenance intervals and service procedures.Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual for the correct procedures in order to drain and fill the coolant.Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Water Pump - Remove and Install" for the correct procedure to remove the water pump and install the water pump.The manufacturing process of the preservative has been improved on the water pump and this has reduced the risk of corrosion from occurring.To ensure that the quality of the coolant is maintained, the coolant should be checked using 4C-9301 Coolant Conditioner Test Kit. This will ensure that the value of pH of the coolant is maintained. This will protect the engine from problems that are associated with an excessive acidity or excessive alkalinity of the fluid.
