The high voltage that is produced by an operating generator set can cause severe injury or death. Before performing any maintenance or repairs, ensure that the generator will not start.Place the engine control switch in the "OFF" position. Attach "DO NOT OPERATE" tags to all starting controls. Disconnect the batteries or disable the starting system. Lock out all switchgear and automatic transfer switches that are associated with the generator.
Open Generator Sets
Perform the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Engine Air Cleaner Service Indicator-Inspect" procedure before performing the following procedure.
Never run the engine without an air cleaner element installed. Never run the engine with a damaged air cleaner element. Do not use air cleaner elements with damaged pleats, gaskets or seals. Dirt entering the engine causes premature wear and damage to engine components. Air cleaner elements help to prevent airborne debris from entering the air inlet.
Never service the air cleaner element with the engine running since this will allow dirt to enter the engine.
Note: This type of air cleaner is only available on open generator sets.

Unfasten latches (1) .

Remove cover (2) .

Remove air cleaner element (3) .
Inspect the replacement element for the following items:damage, dirt and debris.

Install a clean, undamaged air filter element (3). Make sure that the element is properly seated in the air cleaner housing.

Install cover (2). Fasten latches (1) .Enclosed Generator Sets
The air cleaner is located at the rear of the unit on top of the generator.

Note: This type of air cleaner is only available on enclosed generator sets.
Remove bolts (1) and cover (2) .

Clean screen (3) with pressurized air or pressurized water.
Install cover (2) and secure the cover with bolts (1) .
