There may be several specific safety messages on your engine. The exact location and a description of the safety messages are reviewed in this section. Become familiar with all the safety messages.Ensure that all the safety messages are legible. Clean the safety messages or replace the safety messages if the words cannot be read or if the illustrations are not visible. Use a cloth, water, and soap for cleaning the safety messages. Do not use solvents, gasoline, or other harsh chemicals. Solvents, gasoline, or harsh chemicals could loosen the adhesive that secures the safety messages. The safety messages that are loosened could drop off the engine.Replace any safety message that is damaged or missing. If a safety message is attached to a part of the engine that is replaced, install a new safety message on the replacement part. Your Cat dealer can provide new safety messages.

Aftertreatment Safety
The Clean Emissions Module (CEM) (if equipped) is hot when in operation. The temperature of the surface of the enclosure may exceed 250° C (482° F). Never attempt to service the locomotive aftertreatment when the engine is operating. Always follow locomotive and railroad regulations when servicing the aftertreatment system. A shield to cover the sides of the aftertreatment system is provided by the locomotive.Extreme caution should be taken when walking on the top of the CEM. Handrails or guards are not installed to prevent anyone from falling or tripping. Refer to locomotive requirements when preparing to climb on top of the CEM for servicing or repairs. The sensor mounting box, cover, and wire mesh can be damaged if stepped on. The sensor mounting box creates a trip hazard.
