At operating temperature, the engine cooling system is hot and under pressure. Steam can cause personal injury. Check the coolant level only after the engine has been stopped and the fill cap on the radiator is cool enough to touch with your bare hand. Remove the fill cap slowly to relieve pressure. Cooling system conditioner contains alkali. Avoid contact with skin and eyes to prevent personal injury.
Hot oil and components can cause personal injury. Do not allow hot oil or components to contact the skin. Be sure that the engine and components are cool enough to touch with your bare hand prior to performing any service work.
1. Drain the coolant into a suitable container. The capacity of the cooling system is 42 liters (11 U.S. gal).2. Drain the transmission oil into a suitable container. The capacity of the transmission is 67 liters (17.5 U.S. gal). 3. Remove the inlet, exhaust, and aftercooler tubes (1). For the correct procedure, refer to the topic "Remove & Install Muffler and Air Cleaner Assembly" in this module.
Cover the openings of the turbocharger to avoid possible contamination.
4. Mark for identification and location purposes, and disconnect two transmission oil lines (3) from the transmission oil cooler (2).
To avoid possible contamination of the transmission oil system, cap both transmission oil lines (3) and also the openings on transmission oil cooler (2).
5. Support transmission oil cooler (2), and remove two bolts and washers (4) securing cooler bracket (5) and one wiring harness clip.6. Remove four bolts and washers (6) from the flange of transmission oil cooler (2), and remove the cooler and its flange gasket.7. Separate the rear bonnet from the oil cooler core assembly. Use an appropriate sized rod to clean the tube bundles. The following steps are for the installation of the transmission oil cooler.8. Clean the transmission oil cooler flange gaskets, and inspect for wear or damage. Replace as necessary.9. Secure the rear bonnet and its gasket to the oil cooler core assembly.10. Position transmission oil cooler (2) and its gasket, and secure using four bolts and washers (6) on the front cooler flange. Position the wiring harness clip on cooler bracket (5), and secure the bracket with two bolts and washers (4).11. Remove all caps and plugs, and connect two transmission oil cooler lines (3) in their original positions on transmission oil cooler (2).12. Connect the inlet, exhaust, and aftercooler tube assemblies (1). Refer to the topic "Lubricant Viscosities and Refill Capacities" in the Operation and Maintenance Manual.13. Fill the cooling system with coolant.14. Fill the transmission with transmission oil.
