The hammer is activated and the pressure rises. The piston moves upward and the accumulator is charging.

The piston is now in the upper position. The oil passes the lower part of the piston. The oil then activates the spool.

This position of the spool allows oil under high pressure to move the piston downward with increasing velocity via the accumulated oil.
