Machines Equipped With A Power Shift TransmissionThe use of multi-viscosity oil in power shift transmissions must be limited to the correct ambient (outside) temperature range. The new recommendation for the use of SAE 10W-30 oil is a temperature range of - 20°C to + 15°C ( - 4°F to + 59°F). The correct temperature range for the use of SAE 15W-40 oil is - 15°C to + 25°C (+ 5°F to + 77°F). Do not use a multi-viscosity oil in an application where the ambient temperature goes outside the range shown.
The transmission can be damaged when multi-viscosity oil is used for an application where the ambient temperature is too high. At the higher temperatures, the oil becomes thin and will not support the heavy loads that are present on the gears and clutches.
There are three Lubrication and Maintenance Guides that show multi-viscosity oils for power shift transmissions. They are the guide for 920 and 930 Wheel Loaders, Form SEBU5693; 613B Tractor-Scrapers, Form SEBU5398; D10 Tractors, Form SEBU5567. Make a note in these guides to show the new temperature range. The service classification did not change. You must use service classification CD oils that have satisfactory performance in the Caterpillar Oil Test No. TO-2 (Service Class CD/TO-2 Oil).
