(34)Steering Hydraulic System
Use caution when draining oil or changing filters. Hot oil or components can cause personal injury if they contact skin.
Machine level, the parking brake set, the hydraulic oil warm and the engine stopped. 1. Remove the filter cover. 2. Remove and discard the filter element. 3. Remove screen and wash it in clean nonflammable solvent. 4. Clean the cover and inspect the cover seal. Use a new seal if necessary.5. Install the clean screen and new filter element.6. Install the cover. Tighten the cover bolt to 43 4 lb. ft. (59 5 N m). 7. Start the engine and operate the machine for a few minutes. When the oil is warm, observe the oil level. Maintain the oil level to the FULL mark in the sight gauge.(35)Engine Crankcase Breather
If the steering filter service light is on continuously when the oil is warm, and the engine is operating, between 1200-2200 RPM, change the filter element. 1. Stop the engine. Loosen the hose clamp and remove the hose from the breather. 2. Loosen the breather retaining bolt. Remove the clamp from the breather and remove the breather.3. Wash the breather in clean nonflammable solvent. Allow to dry.4. Inspect the O-ring seal and replace it if necessary.5. Install the breather and tighten the clamp.6. Re-connect the hose to the breather and tighten the hose clamp.(36)Cooling System - Add Coolant Conditioner
Always inspect cooling system with engine stopped.Conditioner contains alkali, avoid contact with skin and eyes to prevent personal injury.Remove filler cap slowly to relieve pressure. Steam can cause personal injury.
Machine level, bed lowered, TRANSMISSION/PARKING BRAKE engaged and engine stopped. AT INITIAL FILL, OR REFILL OF THE COMPLETE COOLING SYSTEM, add enough Caterpillar Cooling System Conditioner, or equivalent, so that the cooling system will have a 3% concentration of conditioner. Add 10 pints (4.75 liters) of conditioner to this cooling system. EVERY 250 SERVICE HOURS OR MONTHLY thereafter: Add 2 pints (0.95 liters) of Caterpillar Cooling System Conditioner, or equivalent, to this cooling system. This will maintain the required 3% concentration of cooling system conditioner.
Do not use Caterpillar Cooling System Conditioner with Dowtherm 209 Full-Fill Coolant.
1. Loosen the radiator cap slowly to relieve the pressure, and remove cap. It may be necessary, to drain enough coolant to allow for the addition of conditioner.2. Add Caterpillar Cooling System Conditioner. See above for amount of conditioner to add.3. Inspect radiator cap gasket. Replace if damaged.4. Install radiator cap.(37)Fuel Tank Cap And Screen
1. Remove the fuel tank cap.2. Inspect the cap gasket. Replace the gasket if necessary.3. Remove the retaining snap ring and screen.4. Disassemble the cap and wash all parts in nonflammable solvent.5. Lightly oil the element and assemble the cap.6. Install the screen and retaining ring.7. Install the cap.
