(44)Valve Lash
Adjust valves with engine stopped and cold. If valve clearance is within .003 inch (.076 mm) of the nominal clearance given, adjustment is not required. If clearance is not within these limits, adjust the valves.Use Caterpillar part number 5P7307 engine turning tool to turn engine. See SERVICE MANUAL FOR VALVE ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURE.(45)Cooling System - Changing Antifreeze Solution
Always inspect cooling system with engine stopped.Remove filler cap slowly to relieve pressure. Steam can cause personal injury.Conditioner contains alkali. Avoid contact with skin and eyes to prevent personal injury.
If machine is to be stored in, or shipped to, an area with below freezing temperatures; the cooling system must either be protected with antifreeze to the lowest expected ambient temperature, or drained completely.
When permanent antifreeze and water solutions are used in the cooling system, the solution should be drained and replaced "EVERY 2000 SERVICE HOURS OR 1 YEAR".However, when additions of conditioner are made to the cooling system, "EVERY 250 SERVICE HOURS OR MONTHLY," it is not necessary to drain and refill yearly. The antifreeze change period can be extended to 4000 service hours or 2 years.Do not use Caterpillar Cooling System Conditioner with Dowtherm 209 Full-Fill Coolant.
Machine level, parking brake engaged and the engine stopped. 1. Loosen the radiator cap slowly to release pressure. Remove the cap. 2. Open the radiator drain valve and allow the coolant to drain. 3. Remove the coolant drain plugs from the front and rear ends of the brake and torque converter oil cooler. Allow the coolant to drain.4. Remove the drain plug from the engine oil cooler and allow the coolant to drain. 5. Remove coolant drain plugs from air compressor block and drain coolant.6. Close drain valve. Clean and install all drain plugs. Do not completely fill cooling system. Allow for addition of Caterpillar Cooling System Conditioner, or equivalent.7. Mix the antifreeze solution to provide protection to the lowest expected ambient temperature.
To help avoid air locks, add coolant slowly, at 5 U.S. gallons (19 liters) per minute or less, to within 1/2 inch (1 cm) of bottom of fill pipe.
8. Add coolant (antifreeze solution). See REFILL CAPACITIES.9. Add 10 pints (4.7 liters) of Caterpillar Cooling System Conditioner, or equivalent, so that this cooling system will have a 3% concentration of conditioner.10. Start and run the engine with the radiator cap removed. Allow the coolant to warm and its level to stabilize. Add coolant if necessary. Stop the engine.11. Inspect the radiator cap gasket. Replace gasket if it is damaged. Install the filler cap.(46)Door Window Cams
Remove the cap plugs from the right and left doors (right door shown). Apply lubricant to the cams with a hand operated grease gun. Install the cap plugs.
