Park the machine on a hard, level surface. Stop the engine.

Attach the base of the 8T-5096 Dial Indicator Group to the top of the steering pivot housing. Position the dial indicator actuator on the top of the rear frame.
Set the dial indicator to zero.
Place a hydraulic jack under the rear frame at the pivot assembly.
Raise the hydraulic jack. Record the reading on the dial indicator.
For new bearings and shims, the total movement is less than 1.2 mm (0.05 inch). On a used machine, the maximum acceptable movement is 1.91 mm (0.075 inch).

If the dial indicator measurement is between 1.2 mm (0.05 inch) and 1.91 mm (0.075 inch), add spacers (1) in order to reduce the clearance.Note: There must be at least one spacer on each pin. The gap in both areas should be equal.
If the proper clearance cannot be obtained with spacers, disassemble the steering pivot housing. Replace any worn components.
Repeat steps 2 through 8 for the pivot at the front steering pivot housing. If necessary, add spacers (2) .Oscillation Bearing Clearance
Park the machine on a hard, level surface. Stop the engine.

Attach the base of the 8T-5098 Dial Indicator to the top of the steering pivot housing. Position the dial indicator actuator against the front face of the yoke.
Insert a long, heavy pry bar between the yoke assembly and the steering pivot housing. Use the pry bar in order to move the drum and the yoke assembly as far forward as possible.
Zero the dial indicator.
Use the pry bar in order to shift the yoke assembly rearward.
Record the dial indicator reading.

The total movement of a new assembly should be 0.05 to .23 mm (0.002 to .009 inch). The maximum reading for a used assembly should be 0.51 mm (0.020 inch). If the movement is too large, clearance is reduced by the removal of spacers behind the plate. If the movement is too small, clearance is increased by the addition of spacers.Note: If zero end play or a preload torque is present, then inadequate bearing lubrication may result.
If the proper clearance cannot be obtained with spacers, disassemble the yoke assembly. Replace any worn components.
