Install pinion (26) with the bearings in pinion housing (27) . Make sure that the bearings are seated.
Press bearing cone (5) on pinion (26) . Make sure that bearing cone (5) is seated against the shoulder of pinion (26) . Lubricate the components with axle oil.
Install pinion (26) in pinion housing (27) . Press bearing cone (7) on pinion (26) . Lubricate the components with axle oil.Note: If you freeze the bearing cups, allow the parts to reach a uniform temperature. Then use a driver or a press to reset the bearing cups. The limit for freezing the bearing cups is -29°C (-20°F). Remove any frost and wipe the bearing cups dry. Lubricate the bearing cups with SAE 30W gear oil in order to prevent rust on the bearing cups.Note: If you heat the bearing cones, allow the parts to reach a uniform temperature. Then use a driver or a press to reset the bearing cones. The limit for heating the bearing cones is a maximum of 135°C (275°F) for a maximum of four hours. Lubricate the bearing cones with SAE 30W gear oil after the bearing cones have cooled in order to prevent rust on the bearing cones.
Secure pinion housing (27) in a holding fixture. Install washer (8) and nut (9) . Slowly turn pinion (26) , while you tighten nut (9) in order to achieve a rolling torque of 1.2 to 3.4 N m (10.6 to 30.1 lb in).
If the pinion rolling torque exceeds the specification, back off nut (9) by 1/8 turn and reseat bearing cone (7) and washer (8) against nut (9) . Make sure that there is zero end play of pinion shaft (27) .
When the torque that is needed to turn the pinion is correct, stake nut (9) . To stake nut (9) , peen the collar that is on the nut into the key slot in pinion shaft (26) . Proper peening requires the use of a spherical nose punch with diameter (C) . Hold the punch at angle (B) . The desired result is a stake of minimum length (D) and minimum depth (E) . See Illustration 2 for the correct tooling.Note: The nut may be reused if the collar is not cracked during removal or during restaking.
