2. Remove adapter (3) with the seals from the water pump. Inspect the O-ring seals for wear and damage on the adapter and make a replacement of the O-ring seals if necessary. 3. Loosen the impeller bolt 1/8" (3.18 mm). Install tooling (A). Loosen the impeller on the shaft. Remove tooling (A) and the impeller. 4. Remove carbon seal assembly (5) from the water pump shaft. Remove ring (4) and seal.5. Use steel wool and 6V1541 Quick Cure Primer to clean the pump shaft and the ceramic ring seal counterbore in the pump housing. Replace wear ring (4) and the seal (6) in the water pump housing any time a replacement of the seal assembly is made. The following steps are for the installation of the water pump seal.6. Use a micrometer to measure the pump shaft at the seal area. The shaft diameter must be 19.10 0.05 mm (.752 .002 in.) for a correct fit of the seal assembly.
Clean water only is permitted for use as a lubricant for assistance at installation. Do not damage or put hands on the wear surface of the carbon ring or the ceramic ring. Install the ceramic ring with the smoothest face of the ring toward the carbon seal assembly.
7. Put ceramic ring (4) in position in rubber seal (6). Use the flat end of tool (B), and install ceramic ring (4) and seal (6) in the pump housing.
Avoid contaminating the seal faces with grease or oil. Also, avoid stretching the rubber seal during installation.
The carbon seal assembly must rotate with the water pump shaft after installation.8. Remove spring (7) from seal assembly (5). Use hand pressure and the tool (B) to install the seal assembly (5). Push seal assembly on the shaft until the seal face makes light contact.9. Install spring (7) on the shaft. 10. Install impeller (8). Install the bolt and the washer that hold the impeller. Tighten the bolt to a torque of 39 3 N m (28 2 lb.ft.). 11. Put clean SAE 30 engine oil on O-ring seal (9) that is in position around the edge of the adapter. Install the O-ring seal and the seal in position on the face of the adapter.12. Push adapter (3) into position in the water pump housing. Make sure the groove in the adapter is in alignment with the dowel in the water pump housing. 13. Install water pump cover (1) and the bolts that hold it on the water pump housing.Remove Water Pump
start by: a) remove fan drive 1. Remove bolts (2) from the water pump cover and from elbow (1). Remove the cover. 2. Remove the bolts from bonnet (4) and water pump housing (3). Remove the nuts and the bolt that hold the water pump to the front timing gear housing.3. Remove the water pump and the gaskets.4. Inspect O-ring seal (5) on the tube and make a replacement if necessary.Install Water Pump
