Which Generate This Code:This diagnostic code is recorded when the Machine Control ECM is communicating with the Engine ECM on the J1939 (CAN) Data Link, however, the Machine Control ECM is not receiving certain parameter information that is expected from the Engine ECM. Some conditions that can cause this diagnostic code are listed below:
The software that is installed on the Engine ECM is incorrect.
The software that is installed on the Machine Control ECM is incorrect.
A new ECM has been installed that is not the correct part.Test Step 1. VERIFY THE HARDWARE AND THE SOFTWARE PART NUMBERS
Verify that the following information is correct:
The part number of the installed software of the Machine Control ECM
The part number of the installed software of the Engine ECM
The part number of the Machine Control ECM
The part number of the Engine ECM Note: Contact your dealership's Technical Communicator for the correct part numbers of the hardware and the correct part numbers for the configuration software. Expected Result:All hardware and software part numbers are correct. Results:
OK - All hardware and software part numbers are correct. Proceed to Test Step 2.
NOT OK - All hardware and software part numbers are NOT correct. Repair: Replace the hardware or software that is incorrect with the correct version. For flashing software, refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Flash Program". For replacing ECM modules, refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Replace"STOPTest Step 2. CHECK THE STATUS OF THE DIAGNOSTIC CODE
Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the ON position.
Operate the machine.
Check the status of the CID 0590 FMI 14 diagnostic code.Expected Result:The CID 0590 FMI 14 diagnostic code is not active. Results:
OK - The CID 0590 FMI 14 diagnostic code is not active. The diagnostic code does not exist at this time. The initial diagnostic code could have been caused by a start up problem with one of the ECM controls. Resume normal operation.STOP
NOT OK - The CID 0590 FMI 14 diagnostic code is active. The diagnostic code has not been corrected.Repair: It is unlikely that the ECM has failed. Verify that all possible causes of the diagnostic code have been investigated. Exit this procedure and perform this procedure again. If the diagnostic code remains active or if the diagnostic code is repeatedly activated and no cause can be found, flash the ECM with the latest version of software. Ensure that you have the latest version of software for your specific machine and ECM. Refer to the Testing And Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Flash Program" section of this manual for the correct procedure. If the problem is still present after flashing the latest software to your ECM, contact the dealership's Technical Communicator in order to consult with the Caterpillar Dealer Solutions Network.STOP
