Information:
Your engine may not have the same or all of the gauges described. Refer to the machine Owners Manual for information on the layout of your gauge package.Gauges provide indications of engine performance. Be sure they are in good working order. You can determine what is the "normal" operating range by observing the gauges over a period of time.Noticeable changes in gauge readings indicate potential gauge or engine problems. This also applies to gauge readings that have changed significantly, but are still within specifications. The cause of any sudden or significant change in gauge readings should be determined and corrected. Contact your Caterpillar dealer for assistance as needed. The Caterpillar 3126 HEUI Industrial Engine requires one lamp in addition to the gauge package normally provided. The purpose of the CHECK ENGINE/DIAGNOSTIC lamp is to communicate the status of the engine's electronic system.
If no oil pressure is indicated, STOP the engine. Engine damage can result.
Oil Pressure - Typical oil pressure range is 240 to 480 kPa (35 to 70 psi) when the engine is running at rated engine speed, with SAE 15W40 oil, at operating temperature. A lower pressure is normal at low idling speed. If no pressure is indicated, stop the engine.Higher pressures are normal on start-up with cold oil. Water (Coolant) Temperature - Typical water (coolant) temperature range is 88 to 102°C (190 to 215°F). Maximum allowable temperature is 110°C (230°F) with the cooling system pressurized. Higher temperatures may occur under certain conditions. Ammeter - Indicates the amount of charge or discharge in the battery charging circuit. When the engine is operating, this gauge indicates the charging system voltage. Typical operation of the indicator should be slightly to the positive (right) side of "0" (zero). If the indicator is constantly to the negative (left or red band) side of "0" (zero) or shows excessive (positive) charge, with the engine running during normal operation, have the charging system checked for malfunction and corrected.
Do not exceed 2900 rpm in any situation.
Tachometer (If Equipped) - Indicates engine speed (revolutions per minute [rpm]). The engine can be operated at high idle without damage, but should not be allowed to overspeed. Overspeeding can result in serious damage to your engine. Fuel Level - Indicates fuel level in the fuel tank. The electrically operated gauge registers only when the ignition switch is in the ON (RUN) position. Fuel Pressure - Indicates fuel pressure to the injectors. An orifice in the fuel return line produces a fuel pressure of 200 to 400 kPa (29 to 58 psi) for the injectors in the cylinder head gallery at rated rpm and a minimum pressure of 50 kPa (7 psi) at low idle rpm.Low fuel pressure can be an indication of a plugged fuel filter or fuel inlet screen. If fuel pressure is low, replace the fuel filter and clean the fuel inlet screen located on the suction side of the fuel transfer pump. Service Hour Meter - Indicates the total number of clock hours the engine has operated.
