This article was previously published on Page 13 of the September 18, 1989 issue of Service Magazine.There have been instances in which malfunction of electronic control systems has occurred whenever a radio transmitter on the machine was used. The cause was determined to be incorrect radio antenna installation, combined with the practice of center-tapping the 24 volt battery to obtain 12 volt power for the radio.
When installing a two-way radio, pay particular attention to correct installation of the antenna and feed line. Be sure the antenna base is solidly grounded to the machine. The antenna should not contact or be within 457 mm (18.0") of any metal component or surface. Use good quality coaxial cable, and be sure the coaxial cable connectors are correctly assembled and tight.
Adjust the antenna for the frequency in use, according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Do not center-tap batteries. Use a 24 volt to 12 volt electronic voltage converter such as a 9G6981 Converter Assembly (4 amp) or a 7T8000 Converter Assembly (2 amp).
Never remove the cab-to-chassis ground strap on any machine.
