Information:

Personal injury can result from hydraulic oil pressure and hot oil.Hydraulic oil pressure can remain in the hydraulic system after the engine has been stopped. Serious injury can be caused if this pressure is not released before any service is done on the hydraulic system.Make sure all of the work tools have been lowered to the ground, and the oil is cool before removing any components or lines. Remove the oil filler cap only when the engine is stopped, and the filler cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.
Sudden movement of the machine or release of oil under pressure can cause injury to persons on or near the machine. In order to prevent possible injury, perform the following procedure before testing and adjusting any of the machine hydraulic systems.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Reference: Refer to the Service Manual module Testing and Adjusting, "Machine Preparation for Troubleshooting" for the machine that is being serviced before performing the following procedure. The brake system is a part of the machine hydraulic system. Before any service or testing is performed on the hydraulic system, the pressure that is in the system must be released.Machine Preparation
Park the machine on a smooth, level surface.
Permit only one operator on the machine. All other personnel should be kept away from the machine. All personnel should be in the operator's view.
Lower the work tool to the ground.
Engage the parking brake.
Turn the engine start switch to the OFF position.Release System Pressure
In order to release the oil pressure in the accumulators, apply the service brakes repeatedly. This may require more than ten applications of the brakes.
Move the implement control levers through the full range of travel. This will relieve any pressure that may be present in the implement hydraulic system. Place the lift control lever in the FLOAT position. Place the tilt control lever in the HOLD position.
Turn the steering wheel several times in both directions in order to relieve the pressure in the steering system.
In order to purge the pressure that is in the hydraulic oil tank, depress the plunger on the breaker relief valve that is located on the top of the hydraulic tank.Note: If the machine is not equipped with a breaker relief valve on the hydraulic tank, slowly loosen the filler cap in order to relieve the pressure. Tighten the cap when the procedure is complete.
