Personal injury or death can result from a fire.Fuel leaked or spilled onto hot surfaces or electrical components can cause a fire.Clean up all leaked or spilled fuel. Do not smoke while working on the fuel system.Turn the disconnect switch OFF or disconnect the battery when changing fuel filters.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Do not fill fuel filter with fuel before installing the fuel filter. Contaminated fuel causes accelerated wear to fuel system parts.

Open the engine access doors on the right side of the machine.

Turn fuel shutoff valve (1) clockwise in order to shut off the fuel supply.
Drain the water from the water separator bowl and remove water separator bowl (3) from the bottom of the filter element (2). Use the hose on the separator in order to drain the fuel into a suitable container into a suitable container. Clean the water separator bowl and inspect the seal. If the seal is worn or damaged, install a new seal.
Remove the filter element (2). Properly discard the filter element.
Clean the filter base. Be sure that all of the old seal is removed.
Coat the seal of the new filter element (2) with clean diesel fuel. Install a new filter element (2) . Install the new filter element by hand. When the seal contacts the base, tighten the filter element by an additional 3/4 turn.
Coat the seal of the water separator bowl (3) with clean diesel fuel. Install the water separator bowl (3) to the filter element.
Turnfuel shutoff valve (1) counterclockwise in order to open the valve.
Prime the fuel system. See the Topic "Fuel System - Prime" in this manual.
Start the engine and run the engine. Check the filter and the water separator bowl for leaks.
Close the engine access doors.
