The Grade & Slope Electronic Control System controls the extending of each front leg in order to attain the desired surface profile. Operation of the front legs can be manual or automatic. Manual operation of the rear legs is provided. The system can function in the grade/grade control method or the grade/slope control method. The various components of the Grade & Slope Electronic Control System are shown in illustration 1. A brief description of the major components follows. The Electronic Control Module (ECM) is the central control computer of the Grade & Slope Electronic Control System. Grade sensors, a slope sensor, switches and controllers deliver the necessary information to the ECM. The ECM produces the control signals that are sent to the solenoids for elevation of the machine. The ECM produces the information for the display that is sent to the controllers and the grade sensors. The controllers provide information to the operator and the controllers provide a way to modify the operation of the Grade & Slope System. Each controller communicates with the ECM through the CAT data link. There can be up to six controllers on the Cold Planer. Controllers are usually mounted on the left and/or right side of the operator's console. Controllers can also be mounted in front of the cutter and/or behind the cutter on the left and right sides of the machine. Ground operators on the left and right sides of the machine could use these controllers. The controllers are designed to be movable between any of the six locations on the machine. The Grade & Slope System must be powered down with the on/off switch before disconnecting or connecting a controller and/or a sensor. The CAT data link provides a communications platform for the Grade & Slope System. This data link is separate from other data links on the machine. The slope sensor provides information to the ECM regarding the cross slope. The term "slope" is used in reference to the cross slope. The desired slope (setpoint) is established by the operator at the start of the cut. See Systems Operation, "Setpoints". The ECM will detect any deviation from the slope setpoint. The ECM will correct the extension of the appropriate front leg in order to attain the slope setpoint. When you are using the grade/slope control method, the control of one machine side is determined by the grade. The control of the other machine side is determined by the slope. The slope sensor is mounted to the frame of the machine. The grade sensors provide information regarding the grade to the ECM. The desired grade (setpoint) is established by the operator at the start of the cut. See Systems Operation, "Setpoints". The ECM will detect any deviation from the grade setpoint.
