14. Turn the housing on its side. Remove six bolts (17). Remove retainer (18). 15. Remove ring (19) that holds bearing (20) in position. Remove the bearing from the housing with tooling (A). 16. Remove ring (21). Remove carrier assembly (22), the impeller and stator as a unit from the shaft and turbine with tooling (B). The bearing will come off of the shaft at this time. 17. Remove the seal ring from the shaft. Remove ring (23) from the groove in the shaft. Slide the ring up on the shaft as shown.18. Put tool (C) in position over the shaft as shown. Tool (C) is used as a support for the turbine when the shaft is removed with a press.
If tool (C) is not used as a support for the turbine, damage to the turbine will result when the shaft is removed.
19. Put the turbine and shaft in position in a press as shown. Make sure tool (C) is on the shoulder of the turbine, but is out of the way of the shaft. The splines on the shaft will make contact with tool (C) if the tool is not in a center position around the shaft. Remove shaft (25) from turbine (24) with a press. The bearing race and spacer on the end of the shaft will come off at this time. 20. Remove eight bolts (26). Remove stator (27) from the impeller wheel. 21. Remove eight bolts (30). Turn the impeller wheel over and remove the carrier and impeller wheel (29) from carrier assembly (28). 22. Remove bearing (31) from the carrier. Remove ring (32) from the bearing. 23. Remove gear (33) from the carrier. 24. Remove ring (34) from the carrier. Reworking torque converter housing (17) is recommended in order to improve the shearing capacity of the components. Perform the following Steps on torque converter housing (17). 25. Use a 8.2 mm (0.323 in) drill bit to drill sixteen holes (17A) to Depth (A). Depth (A) is 33.4 mm (1.32 in).26. Use a 10.5 mm (0.41 in) drill bit to drill sixteen holes (17A) to Depth (C). Depth (C) is 5.0 mm (0.20 in).27. Use a 3/8 in tap in order to tap sixteen holes (17A) to Depth (B). Depth (B) is 25.4 mm (1.00 in).Assemble Torque Converter Retarder

1. Install ring (2) on the carrier. Put gear (1) in position on the carrier as shown. 2. Install ring (4) on bearing (3).
Do not hit the bearing on the outside race when it is installed on the carrier. Hit the inside race only.
3. Use a soft faced hammer to install the bearing on the carrier. 4. Put impeller wheel (5) in position on the carrier assembly. Turn the unit over. 5. Put carrier (6) in position in the impeller wheel. Make sure the bolt holes in the carrier assembly, impeller
