Introduction
Fenders can become damaged when debris rides up on the track and gets caught between the track and the fender. Use the information in this publication to add reinforcement material to give better support to the fenders of the above listed machines.Fenders on later machines that have serial numbers above those given, have already been strengthened.Do not perform any procedure, outlined in this publication, or order any parts until you read and understand the information contained within.Reference: Service Manual. Reinforcement Procedure
The fenders may have a tendency to bow because of the heat created by the welding procedure. After a welding pass is made let it cool before making another pass. While a welding pass is cooling, go to the other side of the machine and make a weld pass. Alternate weld passes in this manner to avoid fender bowing.
(1) Angle.
(2) Channel.1. Use the dimensions given to fabricate one angle (1), and one channel (2) for each fender.
Top view.
Side view.2. Put angle (1) in position as shown. Make a 5.0 mm (0.20") fillet weld on both sides, locations (A), and on end (B) to fasten angle (1) in position as shown.3. Install channel (2) by making a 5.0 mm (0.20") fillet weld at each end, locations (C), and on both sides, location (D).
(3) Plate.4. Using a piece of 12.0 mm (0.5") steel and the dimensions given, make plate (3) as shown. The dimension at location (F) is 4.0 mm (0.15") maximum. Angle (E) is 40.7°.
(4) Plate.5. Using a piece of 12.0 mm (0.5") steel and the dimensions given, make plate (4) as shown. The dimension at location (G) is 4.0 mm (0.15") maximum. Angle (H) is 40.7°.6. Use the dimensions shown to locate and mark the center for each of the five holes (J). Use an air carbon arc torch to make a hole of approximately 80.0 mm Ø (3.0" Ø) at each of these locations.
Right fender.
Detail of rear portion of right fender.7. Put plate (3) in position under the right side fender as shown.8. To fasten plate (3) in position, make 5.0 mm (0.2") bevel groove welds, all around, that are 60 mm (2.4") long, every 130 mm (5.1").
Left fender.
Detail of rear portion of left fender.9. Put plate (4) in position under the left side fender as shown.10. To fasten plate (4) in position, make 5.0 mm (0.2") bevel groove welds, all around, that are 60 mm (2.4") long, every 130 mm (5.1").
