Note: After the engine has been installed or rebuilt, carefully monitor the engine in order to detect any unusual engine performance.Warm-up
The jacket water heaters are required to be on whenever the engine is not operating. This allows the engine to be capable of starting and accepting load immediately. Therefore, a warm-up period is not required under normal conditions. However, if the engine has just been installed or rebuilt, the following warm-up procedure is recommended.
Operate the engine at low idle for two to three minutes. Allow the jacket water coolant temperature to begin to rise before increasing the engine rpm to rated rpm. Note: More warm-up time may be necessary when the ambient temperature is below −18 °C (0 °F).
Check all of the gauges during the warm-up period.
Make another walk-around inspection. Inspect the engine for fluid leaks and air leaks. The time that is needed for the engine to reach the normal mode of operation is usually less than the time that is needed for a walk-around inspection. The engine should reach normal operating temperature in a few minutes.Engaging the Driven Equipment
Ensure that the space heaters are secure prior to exciting the generator.
Ensure that the gauges are in the normal ranges for the engine rpm.
If the engine is running at the low idle rpm, increase speed to rated rpm before loading the generator.
