Removal Procedure
Start By:
Remove the power train guard. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Power Train Guard (Transmission) - Remove and Install".
Remove the secondary steering pump. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Secondary Steering Pump - Remove".
Hot oil and components can cause personal injury.Do not allow hot oil or components to contact skin.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Put identification marks on all lines, hoses, wires and tubes for installation purposes. Plug all lines, hoses and tubes. This helps prevent fluid loss and contamination of the fluid system.

Remove eight bolts (1), the washers, and the four half flanges that secure two hoses (2) to retarder hydraulic control valve (3). Disconnect two hoses (2) and the O-ring seals from retarder hydraulic control valve (3) .
Remove the four bolts and the washers that secure hose (4) to retarder hydraulic control valve (3). Disconnect hose (4) from retarder hydraulic control valve (3). Remove the two bolts and the washers that secure hose (5) to retarder hydraulic control valve (3). Disconnect hose (5) from retarder hydraulic control valve (3) .
Disconnect hose (6) and the O-ring seal from retarder hydraulic control valve (3) .

Disconnect hose assembly (7) and the O-ring seal from retarder hydraulic control valve (3). Remove three bolts (8) and the washers that secure retarder hydraulic control valve (3) to the retarder housing. Remove retarder hydraulic control valve (3) from the retarder housing.

Remove O-ring seals (9), (10), and (11) from retarder hydraulic control valve (3) .
