(6) Left flange The axle is used to transmit power from the propel motor to the rear wheels. Power from the axle propel motor goes through final drive planetary (4) to limited slip differential (1). Power from the limited slip differential goes through the axle shafts to the left and right planetary gears. The planetary gears turn the output hubs. The output hubs have flanges in order to mount the wheels. The wheels transfer the power to the ground.Differential gears allow speed difference between the left wheel and the right wheel during turns. If wheel spin is detected, friction discs in the limited slip differential direct power to the wheel with traction. The limited slip differential is designed to limit the torque bias to 70/30. Once this torque bias difference is exceeded, the wheel with lower traction will begin to spin. This is the proper function of the limited slip differential. The limited slip differential is intended to limit torque through one side of the axle to no more than 70 percent of maximum available torque. This prevents damage to the axle.
