ACTION REQUIRED
The steering column universal joint which connects to the hand metering unit (HMU) needs to be inspected to ensure that the bolt is located in the locking groove in the adapter shaft assembly. The bolt and lock nut will need to be replaced. A static torque check needs to be conducted at the three other locations on the steering column.
Note: Ensure that all safety information, warnings, and instructions are read and understood before any operation or any maintenance procedures are performed. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual "Safety Section".

This failure may, in conjunction with other factors or circumstances, result in a risk of personal injury or death. You will not be charged for the service performed.

Rework Procedure
1. Locate the steering column shaft at the underside of the dash assembly inside the cab.

2. Visually check to make sure that shaft (1) is located in universal joint (2) correctly. The shaft end should be inserted beyond the bolt and lock nut (3), just below the top of the universal joint (2) as shown in image 1.1.1.

3. Remove bolt and lock nut (3) from Universal joint (2) at the HMU end of the steering column and discard.
4. Install a new bolt and lock nut making sure that the bolt goes through the locating groove in shaft (1). See the area circled on image 1.2.1.
5. Tighten the nut to a torque of 30 +/- 2.5 Nm (22 +/- 2 lb ft).

6. Carry out a static torque check of 21 Nm (15.5 lb f) on the three remaining bolts and lock nuts (4). See image 1.3.1.
