Axle and Differential Troubleshooting
Many of the following problems can create diagnostic codes or event codes in Cat ET. These codes can help find the root cause of the problem. Cat ET should be used to retrieve the logged codes and active codes.Differential Lock Will Not Engage
The differential lock switch in the joystick is faulty.
The differential lock solenoid valve is stuck in the CLOSED position.
The front axle has an internal axle failure.
The machine speed is above the allowed differential lock speed limit.Differential Lock Will Not Disengage
The differential lock switch is faulty.
The differential lock solenoid valve is stuck open.
The front axle has an internal failure causing the differential lock to remain engaged.Constant Noise In The Differential
The lubricant is above the proper level or below the proper level.
The lubricant is the wrong type.
The wheel bearings are out of adjustment or the wheel bearings are worn.
The ring gear and the pinion do not have the correct contact pattern.
The ring gear and the pinion are damaged or worn.
There is too much pinion to gear backlash or there is too little pinion to gear backlash.
The pinion bearings are loose or worn.
The side bearings are loose or worn.Axle Noise At Different Intervals
The ring gear does not run even because the bolts on the ring gear are not tight.
The ring gear does not run even because the ring gear is warped.
The differential bearings are loose or broken.
The rock guard on the axle input yoke is loose.Noise When The Machine Turns
The differential pinion gears are too tight on the retainer pins or the pinion shaft.
Side gears are too tight on the pinion shaft.
The differential pinion or side gears are worn.
Thrust washers are worn or damaged.
There is too much backlash between the side and pinion gears.Leaking Lubricant
Lubricant is leaking out of the axle shafts or the breather because the lubricant is above the proper level.
Lubricant is leaking out of the axle shafts because of the wrong type of lubricant.
Lubricant is leaking out of the axle shafts because the axle housing breather is restricted.
Lubricant is leaking out of the axle shafts because the oil seal for the axle shaft is damaged.
Lubricant is lost at the pinion shaft because the lubricant is above the proper level.
Lubricant is lost at the pinion shaft because of the wrong type of lubricant.
Lubricant is lost at the pinion shaft because the axle housing breather is restricted.
Lubricant is lost at the pinion shaft because the oil seal for the pinion is damaged.
Lubricant is lost at the pinion shaft because the universal joint flange is loose on the pinion shaft.Axle Input Turns But The Drive Wheels Do Not Turn
The axle shaft is broken.
Ring gear teeth are damaged.
The side gear is broken or the differential is broken.
