Removal Procedure
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Remove cover (1) from exhaust elbow (2) .
Disconnect the pipe for sea water inlet (3) from the exhaust elbow.
Disconnect exhaust pipe from exhaust elbow (2) .Note: The exhaust elbow is installed at 10° below horizontal in order to prevent the entry of sea water into the engine. When the nuts that hold the exhaust elbow to the engine are removed, the exhaust elbow will rotate.
Put a mark on the flange for the exhaust elbow (2). Put another mark on the flange for the turbocharger. The marks identify the proper position for installation of the exhaust elbow.

Remove three nuts (4) from flange (5) and remove the exhaust elbow from the engine.Installation Procedure

Install the exhaust elbow onto the turbocharger. Install a new gasket. Align the mark on flange (5) of the exhaust elbow with the mark on the flange of the turbocharger.
Apply 5P-3931 Anti-Seize Compound to the threads of three nuts (4). Tighten the nuts to a tightness that will prevent movement of the exhaust elbow.

Check that the angle of the exhaust elbow is 10° below the horizontal position. A leveling instrument (6) can be used to set this angle.
Tighten three nuts (4). For stainless steel nuts, tighten the bolts to a torque of 25 N m (18 lb ft). For nuts that are not stainless steel, tighten the nuts to a torque of 22 N m (16 lb ft).

Install hose (3) for the sea water outlet onto exhaust elbow (2) .
Install cover (1) onto exhaust elbow (2) .
