Start By:a. Connect the steering frame lock. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Steering Frame Lock - Separate and Connect" for the machine that is being serviced.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines.Dispose of fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
The AD40 and AE40 Series II axle housings and final drives retain a constant pressure inside the housings. Care must be taken when removing filler and drain plugs. Remove plugs slowly to vent axle housings and relieve pressure.
The removal and installation of the axle shafts is the same for all wheel assemblies on the machine. Only one wheel assembly is shown. 1. Put the wheel in position so final drive drain plug (3) is facing down. Remove drain plug (3) and drain the oil from the final drive into a suitable container for disposal or reuse. The capacity of the final drives and differential is 95 L (25 US gal).2. Remove six bolts (1) that hold final drive cover (2) to the final drive housing.3. Remove final drive cover (2).
Typical Example If the axle shaft can not be removed from the final drive, move the machine a small amount to the front or rear until the axle shaft can be pulled free from the final drive.4. Install Tooling (A) in the end of the axle shaft, as shown. Pull the axle shaft out of the final drive enough to allow a lifting sling to be attached to the axle shaft.5. Attach a hoist and a suitable lifting ling to the axle shaft. Remove axle shaft (5) from the final drive. The weight of the axle shaft is 38 kg (84 lb). 6. Use Tooling (B) to remove retainer ring (6) from the axle shaft. Remove sun gear (7) and thrust washer (8).Installation Procedure
Check the condition of all O-ring seals and of all parts. If any components are worn or damaged, use new parts for replacements.
Typical Example1. Be sure the axle shaft is clean and free of dirt and foreign material.2. Attach a hoist and a suitable lifting sling to axle shaft (1). Place the axle in position in the final drive housing.3. Use Tooling (A) to install the axle into the splines in the differential.
Typical Example4. Remove Tooling (A). Put the thrust washer in position on the axle shaft. Slide sun gear (2) into position in the final drive planetary. Install the retaining ring that holds gear (2) on the axle.5. Turn the flat sides of the three planet shafts toward the outside to provide clearance for the counterbore in cover assembly (3).
If final drive cover (3) does not fit flat against the final drive, remove the cover assembly and repeat
