The condition and state of charge of the battery at each regular inspection will indicate if the charging system is operating efficiently. An adjustment is necessary when the battery is always in a low state of charge or an excessive amount of water must be added to the battery (more than one ounce of water per cell per week or per every 50 service hours).Charging units and voltage regulators should be tested on the machine when possible, using wiring and accessories that are a permanent part of the system. Bench testing will provide the technician with an operational test of the charging unit or voltage regulator. Pre-repair testing will advise the depth of needed repairs. Final testing will prove the units are restored to their original operating efficiency.Generator Regulator
GENERATOR REGULATOR ADJUSTMENTWhen a generator is either overcharging or is not charging enough, a generator regulator tester can be used to determine whether the voltage regulator control, or the current limiter control, or both, require adjustment. To obtain an accurate test, the regulator cover must not be removed and the regulator must be warmed to operating temperature.The voltage regulator and the current limiter controls have a spring tension adjustment screw. To increase generator voltage or current, increase the spring tension on the respective control. Decrease spring tension to decrease generator output. After a regulator has been adjusted always test the generator output with the regulator cover installed.Alternator Regulators

When an alternator is either overcharging or undercharging the battery, the alternator charging rate can be adjusted. Remove the pipe plug from the cover of the alternator regulator and use a screwdriver to turn the inside adjustment. Turn the adjustment one or two notches to increase or decrease the alternator charging rate.

The alternator voltage and current regulator is a circuit of transistors, capacitors, diodes and resistors and is integral with the alternator. A potentiometer in the regulator circuit is adjustable. Remove the plug in the alternator end cover and turn the potentiometer adjustment screw to either increase or decrease alternator voltage. A voltmeter should be used when making the adjustment.

Cylinder Liners
The height of the liner over the cylinder block or top plate is important. Use the 1P5510 Liner Projection Tool Group to check liner height. Special Instruction GMG00623 explains tool usage. Correct liner height over the cylinder block or top plate, under installation pressure, is .0020 to .0056 in. (0,05 to 0,14
