Diamonds on the grooved lining are more easily cracked and broken. Asbestos linings may crack also, but the asbestos fibers tend to hold the broken pieces together. Riveting asbestos-free linings to bands requires greater care than when riveting asbestos lining. Observe the following suggestions:
1. Begin riveting at the center of the band to equalize any tolerance errors in the band or the lining. Work from the center to the outer rivets on each end. The lining segment may be held in alignment with a loose rivet on both ends of the lining.2. If the rivets will not push in freely by hand, drill the lining using the band assembly as a template. Use a drill that is smaller in diameter than the hole in the band. The drill should not enlarge the hole in the brake band. If the holes are too far out of alignment, rework the band holes by welding and redrilling the band. Use the lining as a template to mark the location of new rivet holes drilled in the band. The lining may crack if the counterbore is reworked. Rivet heads should not contact the lining counterbore.3. Use just enough force to set the rivet. Excessive force will crack the lining. The compressive strength of asbestos-free lining is 20% less than that of asbestos lining.4. Take care not to bump the lining. The lining is more easily cracked than asbestos lining when it is impacted by a hard object.
