Attach a suitable lifting device to tailgate (1). The weight of tailgate (1) is approximately 454 kg (1000 lb). Remove bolts (2) and spacers (3) that secure tailgate (1) to the arm assemblies. Remove shims (4) and tailgate (1) from the machine.

Remove bolts (5) and the washers that secure shock absorbers (6) to tailgate (1).

Attach a suitable lifting device to arm assembly (7). The weight of arm assembly (7) is approximately 163 kg (360 lb).

Remove bolts (8), nut (9), and the washers that secure chain (10) to the mounting plate. Reposition chain (10) out of the way.

Remove bolt (12) and washer (11). Remove arm assembly (7) from the machine.

Use Tooling (A) to remove bushings (13) from the arm assembly.

Remove thrust washer (17) and pin (18). If equipped, disconnect grease line (16) from bracket (14). Remove bolts (15) and the washers. Remove bracket (14) and the shims. Installation Procedure

Install tailgate (1) in the reverse order of removal.

Use Tooling (B) to install bushings (13).
Observe the clearances and fit of arm assemblies (7) and tailgate (1). Arm assemblies (7) must be clear from the body at either side and tailgate (1) must be central.
The chain assemblies should start to raise tailgate (1) when the body is raised to an angle of 4°. Two short links can be fitted to one side for a 10 mm (0.4 inch) adjustment from one side to the other.

Use shims as required for clearance between shock absorbers (6) and the body. Maximum two shims per side.
Tighten bolt (12) to a torque of 460 35 N m (339 26 lb ft). Ensure that the arm and thrust washer are seated against the pivot-tailgate casting face.
Do not torque tighten long link chain assembly bolts (9). Tighten the bolts to achieve minimum clearance. Ensure that the links freely rotate.
As required, use a maximum of three shims per side for brackets (14). Assemble shims with the open end of the slot to the rear. If two or three shims are fitted, use bolts 7X - 2558. Tighten the bolts for pivot mounts (14) to a torque of 270 40 N m (200 30 lb ft).

Use a maximum six 154-6369 shims (4) and one 360-4699 shims (4) per side as required.
If 5 - 14 mm (0.2 - 0.6 inch) shims are fitted, use 7X-2556 bolts. If 15 - 19 mm (0.6 - 0.7 inch) shims are fitted, use 8T-4173 bolts.
Tighten bolts (2) to a torque of 270 40 N m (200 30 lb ft).
The gap between the tailgate and body should measure 10 + 2 - 4 mm (0.4 + 0.16 - 0.80 inch). Adjust if necessary.
