Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Hot oil and components can cause personal injury. Do not allow hot oil or components to contact skin.
The removal and installation procedures are the same for the front and rear drive axle shafts. 1. Start the machine, and move it to the front or rear until drain plug (1) is in the position shown.2. Connect the steering frame lock link. See the topic "Separate & Connect Steering Frame Lock Link" in this module.3. Remove drain plug (1), and drain the oil from the final drive into a suitable container for storage or disposal. The capacity of the final drive (front or rear) is 218 liters (56.7 U.S. gal). Nine bolts and washers hold cover (5) to the planet carrier.4. Only remove one bolt (2) and the washer from cover (5) as shown.5. Install a 1/2-13 NC guide bolt (3), approximately 203 mm (8 in) long in place of bolt (2).6. Remove remaining eight bolts (2) and the washers that hold cover (5) in position.7. Install three 1/2-13 NC forcing screws (4) in cover (5) as shown. Tighten the forcing screws evenly to loosen cover (5) from the planet carrier. 8. Fasten Tooling (A) to cover (5) using a suitable size bolt and nut. Fasten a hoist to Tooling (A). Remove cover (5) from the wheel and final drive group. The weight of the cover is 32 kg (70 lb).9. Remove the O-ring seal from cover (5).10. Remove four self locking bolts, and remove the drive axle shaft spacer plate from the back side of cover (5). 11. Install a 1/2-13 NC forged eyebolt (6) into the end of drive axle shaft (7) as shown. Pull the drive axle shaft out of the wheel and final drive group until a hoist can be fastened to it.12. Fasten a lifting sling and a hoist to drive axle shaft (7) as shown. Remove the drive axle shaft from the wheel and final drive group. The weight of the drive axle shaft is 107 kg (235 lb). 13. Remove retaining ring (8), sun gear (9) and spacer (10) from the end of the drive axle shaft. The following steps are for the installation of the drive axle shafts.14. Be sure the drive axle shaft is thoroughly clean and free of dirt and debris prior to installation.15. Fasten a lifting sling and a hoist to drive axle shaft (7). Put the drive axle shaft in position in the wheel and final drive group.
