SERVICE LETTER SUPPLEMENT FOR OCTOBER 29, 1990 SL - PRIORITY - BRAKE ASSEMBLY TO BE ADDED TO THE REAR DRUM OF CERTAIN CB-214B AND CB-224B COMPACTORS - PI3489 - MAILED US AND CANADA, COSA

U-8 O-8 Some information needs to be clarified in the Service Letter which follows: October 29, 1990 - PI3489; Brake Assembly To Be Added To The Rear Drum Of Certain CB214B And CB224B Compactors The following information should clarify what dealers are to do if they performed the May 31, 1990 Letter No. 9 Service Letter - PI3480, and have the October 29, 1990 Service Letter - PI3489 to do on the same machines. The propel motor on CB214B and CB224B Compactors may have one of two different internal motor housing dimensions where the brake shaft seal is located, requiring one of two different shafts and seals. This is critical to the proper sealing of the brake shaft to brake housing. Installation of an incorrect shaft and seal into the motor housing may cause case drain leakage from the motor into the brake housing when the parking brake is applied. It may also cause leakage of the brake release pressure into the motor case drain when the parking brake is released. The July 28, 1990 Service Letter Supplement identified the group of machines which used a known housing dimension. This Service Letter corrected the original May 31, 1990 Letter No. 9 Service Letter. When the original Service Letter was released, Caterpillar was unaware that parts with more than one housing dimension had been supplied. The October 29, 1990 Service Letter - PI3489, along with the December 12, 1990 Service Letter Supplement, addresses those machines which have a housing dimension in question. This Service Letter separates the machines into two different groups in the rework procedure, directing the use of the proper shaft and seal depending on housing dimensions. If a machine was reworked under the May 31, 1990 Letter No. 9 Service Letter - PI3480 prior to the July 28, 1990 Service Letter Supplement, and falls under Group 1 of the October 29, 1990 Service Letter - PI3489 rework procedure, it is necessary to rework the machine by adding the 812980 brake shaft and 813198 seal. Upon disassembly, verify the housing dimensions to insure that the correct shaft and seal combination are being used. If a machine was reworked under the May 31, 1990 Letter No. 9 Service Letter - PI3480 prior to the July 28, 1990 Service Letter Supplement, and falls under Group
