Component Code 1071SUBJECT: Possible Air Leaks At The Elbows In Engine Air Lines
Groups
PROBLEM:
There may be wear on the elbows (1) and (2) in the air lines groups on the engine in these trucks. Illustrations 1 and 2 show a typical air lines group. This wear may result in an air leak. The air leak could cause a loss of inlet manifold pressure. This could result in a loss of engine power. The air leak may allow unfiltered air to enter the air intake system of the engine. This may result in accelerated wear of engine components.
SOLUTION:
A production fix for this problem will not be available until 2003. Until the production fix is available, the following Steps should be taken:
Clean and inspect the joints at each end of elbows (1) and (2). If excessive wear is evident, replace the elbow.
Replace the seals at each end of elbows (1) and (2) with new 6V-3917 O-Ring Seals (3). Four new O-ring seals are required for each elbow.
After elbows (1) and (2) are installed, apply a of bead 8T-9013 Red RTV High Temperature Sealant (X) to the joint at each end of elbows (1) and (2).
Install the retainers and brackets where applicable.
At each Preventative Maintenance inspection, check the joints where the sealant was applied. Check for cracking or degradation of the sealant. Reapply the sealant if necessary.
