Location of the Machine ECM (5) Machine ECM (6) J1 Connector (7) J2 ConnectorPrior to the replacement of the ECM, ensure that replacement of the ECM is absolutely necessary. The ECM is seldom the cause of a diagnostic code. Always check that power is available to the ECM. Battery voltage is required between the following contacts of the ECM connectors: J2-1, J2-23, J2-47, J2-57 and J2-70 to contacts J2-2, J2-22, J2-46, J2-56 and J2-69.
Procedure
Turn the key start switch to the OFF position.
Open the Front Access Door (1) of the compartment to the rear of the cab.
Remove the machine ECM (5). See the illustrations above.
Make sure that the replacement ECM has the correct part number.
Connect the machine harness to the ECM.
Install the replacement ECM.
Turn the disconnect switch (4) and the key start switch to the ON position.
Determine if the ECM has been programmed or if the ECM has not been programmed. Connect the Caterpillar Electronic Technician (Cat ET) to the diagnostic connector of the machine. The Cat ET will communicate with the ECM. See Testing And Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Flash Program".
Reinstall the access panel to the compartment to the rear of the cab.
