Remove the drive shaft. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Drive Shaft - Remove and Install".
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Note: Install caps and plugs on all openings in order to prevent dirt or debris from entering the system. Cleanliness is an important factor. Before the removal procedure, the exterior of the component should be thoroughly cleaned. This will prevent dirt from entering the internal mechanism.
Wash the transmission prior to removal in order to avoid contamination.
Drain the oil from the torque converter into a suitable container for storage or disposal. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Torque Converter Sump Oil - Change".

Remove bolts (2) that hold guard assembly (1) to transmission (3).

Remove bolts (4) and guard assembly (1) from transmission (3).

Remove bolt (5) and the clip from transmission (3).

Put identification on harness assemblies (6) for installation purposes. Disconnect harness assemblies (6). Remove bolt (7) and the clip from transmission (3).

Remove the wire lock. Use Tooling (A) (not shown) to loosen the nut.
Disconnect harness assembly (9) from the manifold assembly.
Disconnect hose assembly (8) and remove the clip from transmission (3).

Remove bolt (10) and the clips that hold the hose assembly to transmission (3).

Disconnect hose assemblies (11) and (12) from transmission (3).

Attach Tooling (B) and a suitable lifting device on transmission (3). The weight of transmission (3) and the transfer gears is approximately 1179 kg (2600 lb).

Remove bolts (14), the washers, the grommet, the spacer and guard (15) from the transmission. Remove tie strap (16) from the transmission.

Remove the wire lock and disconnect harness assembly (17) from speed sensor (18).

Remove bolts (19) that hold transmission (3) to the differential carrier assembly. Remove transmission (3) and the transfer gears from the machine.
Remove the O-ring seal from the differential carrier assembly.
