View B-B (1) Bypass switch (10) Bypass spool (11) SpringThe hydraulic filter (4) for left front brake cooling oil is located on the left side of the main frame. The hydraulic filter (2) for right front brake cooling oil is located on the right side of the main frame. The gear pump for the hoist and for brake cooling sends oil to the control valve for the hoist and for the brake cooling. When the hoist is not being used, oil will flow through inlet line (3) and (5) to each of the hydraulic filters (2) and (4) for front brake cooling oil.Oil goes through inlet passage (6). The oil fills the space between the inside of filter housing (8) and oil filter element assembly (9). During normal operation, the oil goes through oil filter element assembly (9) to outlet passage (7). The oil exits through the outlet line. The oil flows to the front brake. The element assembly (9) stops any debris that is in the oil.If oil filter element assembly (9) becomes full of debris, the restriction to the flow of oil causes a pressure increase inside the filter. The pressure increase causes bypass spool (10) to move against the force of spring (11). Bypass switch (1) will be activated and an alarm will be registered in the cab.The oil then flows past the open bypass valve to the remainder of the hydraulic system. When the oil does not go through the oil filter element assembly (9), the debris that is in the oil will cause damage to other components in the hydraulic system.Correct maintenance must be used in order to be certain that the oil filter element assembly (9) does not become full of debris. If the oil filter element assembly (9) is full of debris, the flow of clean oil to the hydraulic system will be stopped.
