Required Tools
Tool     Part Number     Part Description     Qty
A     -     Vise     1
B     178-1742     Wrench     1    Start By:
Remove the grapple cylinders. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Grapple Cylinder - Remove and Install".
Illustration 1 g00652719
Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before the disassembly procedure, the exterior of the component should be thoroughly cleaned. This will help to prevent dirt from entering the internal mechanism.
Remove hose (1) .
Loosen the locking tab (2) in head (3). Loosen locking tab (2) by bending up the flat edge on the countersunk part of head (3) .
Illustration 2 g00652726
Remove head (3), piston rod (6), and piston (5) from cylinder tube (4) .
Fasten piston rod (6) in a vise. Place a support under the piston rod.
Illustration 3 g00652453
Remove piston seals (7) .
Always wear protective gloves when handling parts that have been heated.
When you heat the piston, high pressure forms from the thread lock compound. This could in certain conditions cause the bottom of the piston to be pushed off.
Heat piston (5). Heat the piston until the material stays dark red. This may take three to five minutes of constant heating.Note: The solid end of piston (5) should receive additional heat.
Use Tool (B) to remove piston (5) .
Remove head (3) .
Remove rod wiper (12), O-ring seal (11),backup ring (10), bushing (9) and piston rod seal (8) from head (3) .
