System voltage circuit
Illustration 2 g01897695
Location of the machine ECM (typical left side view)This condition indicates that the battery circuit for the Electronic Control Module (ECM) is intermittent while the engine is running. If the battery voltage disappears without returning, the ECM will not log this diagnostic code and the engine will shut down. The ECM detects the following conditions:
Three voltage readings that are below 6 Volts DC in a period of seven seconds will be detected by the ECM. The voltage must subsequently increase to more than 9 Volts DC.
The keyswitch is in the ON position.
The engine is running.
The engine is not cranking.System Response:The ECM may stop injecting fuel. This may be dependent on the duration of the fault. The check engine lamp and the warning lamp may come on as if the keyswitch was just turned on and the engine started. The engine may experience changes in the engine rpm, and intermittent engine shutdowns or complete engine shutdowns while the conditions that cause this diagnostic code are present.Test Step 1. TEST THE BATTERY.
Turn the key start switch to the ON position.
Observe the status of the diagnostic code.Expected Result:The diagnostic code is active. Results:
YES - The diagnostic code is active. Repair: See Special Instruction, SEHS7633, "Battery Test Procedure".STOP
NO - The diagnostic code is NOT active. Proceed to Test Step 2.Test Step 2. CHECK IF THE DIAGNOSTIC CODE IS STILL ACTIVE.
Inspect the harness connectors. Clean the contacts of the harness connectors and check the wires for damage to the insulation that is caused by excessive heat, corrosion, or chafing.
Perform a 45 N (10 lb) pull test on each of the wires that are associated with the circuit.
Reconnect all harness connectors in order to make sure that the connectors are fully seated. Also, make sure that the clips for each connector are completely fastened.
Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the ON position.
Operate the machine.
Determine if the diagnostic code is active.Expected Result:The diagnostic code is not active. Results:
YES - The diagnostic code is not active. The initial diagnostic code was probably caused by a poor electrical connection. The problem does not exist at this time. Resume normal machine operation.STOP
NO - The diagnostic code is active. The problem has not been corrected.Repair: Check the circuit again. It is unlikely that the ECM has failed. Exit this procedure and perform this procedure again. Prior to replacing an ECM, always contact your dealership for possible consultation with Caterpillar. This consultation may greatly reduce repair time. If the ECM requires replacement, refer to Troubleshooting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Replace".STOP
