Remove the pistons and connecting rods.

Piston from a turbocharged engine
Make a temporary mark on the components of the piston and connecting rod assembly. This will ensure that the components of each piston and connecting rod assembly can be reinstalled in the original cylinder. Note the correct orientation of the connecting rod in relation to the piston. Do not interchange components.
Use Tooling (A) to remove compression rings (1) and (2), and oil control ring (3) from the piston.Note: Identify the orientation of the piston rings for installation.
Use Tooling (B) to remove retaining ring (4) and (5).
Remove piston pin (6) and connecting rod (7) from piston the piston.
If necessary, remove bolts (8) and connecting rod cap (9) from connecting rod (7).
Remove the lower half of connecting rod bearing (10) from connecting rod cap (9). Remove the upper half of connecting rod bearing (10) from connecting rod (7). Keep the bearing shells together.
Removal of the piston pin bushing in the connecting rod must be carried out by personnel with the correct training. Also special machinery is required. For more information refer to your authorized Caterpillar dealer.

Inspect piston pin bearing (11) for wear or damage. Refer to Specifications, "Pistons and Rings" for more information. If necessary, replace connecting rod (7) or replace piston pin bearing (11).If necessary, use Tooling (C) and a suitable press to remove piston pin bearing (11) from connecting rod (7).
Repeat Steps 1 through 7 to disassemble the remaining pistons and connecting rods.
