Place the torque converter on wood support blocks as shown. The weight of the torque converter is approximately 89 kg (195 lb). 43. Install Tooling (B) on the torque converter updrive gearbox as shown. Attach a hoist and suitable lifting chains to Tooling (B). Use the hoist to carefully install the torque converter updrive gearbox on the torque converter. The weight of the torque converter updrive gearbox is approximately 228 kg (502 lb). 44. Install eight bolts (40) and the washers that hold the torque converter to the gearbox. Tighten bolts (40) to a torque of 120 20 N m (90 15 lb ft). 45. Use the proper equipment to handle bearing cup (41). Lower the temperature of bearing cup (41). Install bearing cup (41) in retainer (42). 46. Put retainer (42) in position in the torque converter updrive gearbox. Install six bolts (43) and the washers that hold retainer (42) to the gearbox. Tighten bolts (43) to a torque of 50 7 N m (37 5 lb ft). 47. Use the proper equipment to handle bearing cones (44). Heat the bearing cones to a maximum temperature of 135°C (275°F). Install a bearing cone (44) on each side of torque converter output gear (45).48. Install retaining ring (46) in the groove in output gear (45). 49. Put output gear (45) in position in the torque converter updrive gearbox. Make sure the splined end of the gear is facing towards the housing. 50. Use the proper equipment to handle bearing cup (47). Lower the temperature of bearing cup (47). Install bearing cup (47) in retainer (48). 51. Install two 3/81/2 inch - 16 X 2 inch NC guide pins (50) in the torque converter updrive gearbox.52. Install the full 9EL2151 shim pack (49) on guide pins (50). 53. Put a suitable plate (51) on the top of output gear assembly (45) as shown. 54. Install retainer (48) on the torque converter updrive gearbox. DO NOT install the O-ring seal on the retainer at this time.55. Install six bolts (52) and the washers that fasten retainer (48) to the gearbox. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 50 7 N m (37 5 lb ft). 56. Use Tooling (A) to check bearing end play. The bearing end play must be 0.15 0.05 mm (.006 .002 in). Add or remove shims in order to get the correct bearing end play. If end play is less than 0.10 mm (.004 inch) add additional shims. If the end play is greater than 0.20 mm (.008 inch) remove shims.57. When the correct shim thickness has been obtained, remove retainer (48), the shims, plate (51) and output gear assembly (45) from the torque converter updrive gearbox. 58.
