Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before assembly, all parts should be thoroughly cleaned in cleaning fluid. Allow the parts to air dry. Wiping cloths or rags should not be used to dry parts. Lint may be deposited on the parts which may cause later trouble. Inspect all parts. If any parts are worn or damaged, use new parts for replacement.

The front axle assemblies and the rear axle assemblies are driven by different drive chain. the drive chains are installed on drive sprockets (B) and (D) that are mounted on the drive shaft of the hydrostatic piston motor. The two drive sprockets are the same component. The drive sprocket on the hydrostatic piston motor has sprocket drives on different planes. The drive sprockets on the front and rear axles are the same component. The sprockets on the front and rear axles are mounted at 180 degrees of opposite direction. Note that sprocket (A) is in line with sprocket (D) and that sprocket (C) is in line with sprocket (B) . The drive sprockets are installed in a manner that will allow the drive chains to turn in a straight line. If any of the sprockets are installed incorrectly the drive chains can not be installed properly. Note the orientation of all of drive sprockets (B) and (D) . Note the orientation of the sprockets (A) and (C) on the axles.

Install spacer (13) onto the shaft.
Place drive chain assembly (12) on inner sprocket (11) .
Install the inner sprocket (11) onto the shaft.
Place drive chain assembly (10) on the outer sprocket (9) .
Install the outer sprocket (9) onto the shaft.
Install hard washer (8) and bolt (7) to the shaft. Tighten the bolt.Note: The front and rear axles must be worked on simultaneously. This is due to the adjustment method for the drive chain tension.

The slack side of the drive chain is the top. The taut side of the chain is the bottom.

Use Tooling (A) in order to adjust axles (6) and the drive chain tension to the drive chain.
Adjust Tooling (A) in order to achieve the proper tension of the chain. Adjust the chain to 12.5 2.5 mm (0.50 0.09 inch) of free movement on the slack side.Ensure that the drive chain is taut below the sprockets when you are measuring the amount of movement in the chain.
Tighten eight nuts (5) to 50 15
