Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Park the machine on a hard, level surface. Lower the scraper bowl to the ground and engage the parking brake. Chock the wheels in order to prevent the machine from moving.
Put identification marks on all lines, hoses, wires and tubes for installation purposes. Plug all lines, hoses and tubes. This helps prevent fluid loss and contamination of the fluid system.
Drain the coolant from the cooling system into a suitable container. The volume of the cooling system is 83 L (22 US gal) .
Open the side access panel to the engine.
Remove the oil filler. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Engine Oil Filler - Remove and Install" .
Remove the alternator. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Alternator - Remove and Install" .

Remove electrical connectors (1) from connector clip (2) . Disconnect electrical connectors (1) .
Loosen hose clamp (3) . Disconnect hose (4) from valve (5) .

Loosen hose clamp (6) . Disconnect hose (7) from valve (8) .
Loosen retaining nut (9) . Disconnect hose (10) from water pump assembly (11) .

Remove bolt (12) and the washer that secures clip (13) , bracket (14) , and elbow (15) to oil cooler bonnet (16) .
Remove bolt (17) that secures elbow (15) to oil cooler bonnet (16) . Remove gasket (18) .

Remove two bolts (19) that secure oil cooler bonnet (16) to water pump assembly (11) .
Remove bolt (20) that secures bracket (21) to oil cooler bonnet (16) . Remove gasket (22) . Remove oil cooler bonnet (16) from the engine oil cooler. The weight of the oil cooler bonnet is 5.3 kg (12 lb) .

Remove oil dipstick (23) . Remove bolt (24) and the washer that secures clip (25) to the engine block.

Remove bolt (26) , the washer and the nut that secures bracket (27) to the engine block.
Remove dipstick tube (28) from the engine block.

Remove two hose clamps (29) and hose (30) that secures water pump assembly (11) to tube (31) .

Remove two bolts (32) that secure bypass elbow (33) to the water temperature regulator. Disconnect bypass elbow (33) from the water temperature regulator. Remove gasket (34) .

Remove four bolts (35) that secure water pump assembly (11) to front gear housing (36) . Remove clip (37) .
Use two people to remove water pump assembly (11) from front gear housing (36) . The weight
