Illustration 1 g06165789The Retarder control lever (1) is located to the right side of the steering column. The control lever has four positions:OFF position - When the lever is in position (0), the retarding system is disabled.MEDIUM position - Move the lever to position (I) to enable four cylinder engine compression braking and transmission retarding (if equipped).HIGH position - Move the lever to position (II) to enable six cylinder engine compression braking and transmission retarding (if equipped).AUTOMATIC position - Move the lever to position (AUTO) to enable the Automatic Retarder Control (ARC) system. The ARC system will modulate the retarding system to maintain a speed set by the operator. This is the recommended setting for optimal gear selection and retarding systems control.Note: The engine compression brake allows the operator to slow the machine without the service brakes, reducing brake wear and overheating. Use the engine compression brake to regulate the speed of the machine. The engine compression brake is not a substitute for the service brakes. The engine compression brake cannot stop the machine and the engine compression brake cannot hold the machine stationary. The service brakes must be used to stop the machine completely. To hold the machine stationary, engage the park brake.Note: There is a signal lamp on the instrument cluster which will illuminate if there is a fault with the engine compression brake. Also, there is a symbol on the LCD screen of the instrument cluster that appears when the engine compression brake is in operation. The CAT Information Display will also show the status of the retarder system and the position of the retarder control lever.Note: During regeneration, the engine compression brake will operate as normal. However, a change in engine retarding performance may be noticed. An elevated engine idle speed will be noticed when coming to a stop.Note: The engine compression brake depends on a free flow of engine lubricating oil for correct operation. Before the engine compression brake is used, the engine should be operating at normal operating temperature.Note: The retarding performance guidelines are on a film inside the cab. This film is for sea level operation only. At moderate to high altitude, a slower speed and lower gear should be used.Manual Retarder Control
The engine compression brake is activated by selecting the Medium (I) or High (II) lever positions and the release of the throttle pedal. The engine compression brake is deactivated by selecting the OFF position or applying the throttle pedal. The engine compression brake will disengage at low engine speed.Specific operating conditions may be required to activate the engine compression brake:
During flat ground or uphill operation, the engine compression brake can activate, if required, when the transmission is in third gear or higher.
During downhill operation, when the retarder lever is in the Medium (I) or High (II) position, the engine compression brake will activate in all gears. The amount of engine compression brake that is selected depends on the grade and payload. When the machine is loaded or when operating on steep
