The 1678134 Vibration Damper will need to be replacedwith 0R7849 Vibration Damper if it is found to be leaking from its sealplug. For spare engines from Morton, checkfor a ?D? stamp below the engine block serial tag located at the left rearend of the engine. The ?D? stamp denotes that the rework has already beenperformed. Also replace all the 1678134 Damper formarine propulsion and auxiliary engines.Stamp a ?D? marking below the block serial taglocated at the left rear of the block after the rework has been done.
Inspection of the 1678134 Crankshaft Vibration Damper
Inspect the damper face plate for signs of fluidleakage from the seal plug. This will be evident by streak/s of the siliconbase fluid running across the damper face or dirt adhering around the sealplug. The silicon base fluid would over time affect the paint causing peelingor blistering. If fluid is found to be leaking from the seal plug, replacethe damper with the 0R7849 Damper.
Also, inspect the welding on the seal plug.Buff the area surrounding the seal plug with sand paper and inspect thewelding pattern. If the welding goes over and out of the circumferenceof the rim of the seal plug, replace the damper.
The above photos show bad welding on the sealplug. Only one side of the plug is welded.
The above photos show paint scaling due tocontact with the silicon base fluid.
The above shows a good weld all around theplug.
If there is a doubt as to the correctnessof the weld, replace the 1678134 Vibration Damper.
Removal of 1678134 Crankshaft Vibration Damper
1. Remove the bolts and damper guard (1) fromthe engine.2. For front mounted dampers, remove twobolts (2), and install two 1/2 -13 NC Guide Bolts. Remove the remainderof bolts (2). Pry the damper assembly (3) out slightly and attach hoistand strap as illustrated. The weight
