3500 Family Of EnginesDamage to the injector and possibly to the engine can be caused by incorrect installation of the injector. Always follow the steps in the Disassembly and Assembly Module in the Service Manual. Additionally, here are more steps that can prevent possible problems.
...Before installing the injector, put engine clean oil on the injector retaining clamp for better seating. Poor seating of the injector and clamp can cause distortion of the injector body.
...Correct torque on the injection clamp bolt is very important. Inadequate torque can cause combustion leakage between the injector and cylinder head at the tapered bore. Excessive torque can cause distortion of the injector body. Your Service Manual gives the correct torque.
...As stated in the Service Manual, do NOT tap or hit the injector when it is being installed. However, after the injector has been correctly installed, a soft hammer can be used to tap the top of the injector to insure all parts are seated. Do this only AFTER the injector is completely installed.
...Always check the injector rack to be sure it moves in an out freely after installation. If not, remove and reinstall the injector.
