Inspection
Inspect the broom for uneven wear and for excessive wear. If necessary, replace the bristles.Adjustment
Uneven wear of the bristles can occur when the broom is used in industrial applications. The brush leaves a pattern during operation which indicates the orientation of the brush. In most applications, the top housing of the broom should be parallel with the surface that is being cleaned. The pattern of the brush should be cylindrical and even. If the pattern is cone-shaped or if the pattern is uneven, consult your Caterpillar Dealer. In order to test the pattern of the broom, perform the following steps.Perform the following test with 0 degrees of articulation in order to ensure that the broom height is adjusted properly.
Raise the broom and move the host machine to a very dusty area.
Place the broom in the operating position. Operate the broom for a few seconds.Note: Do not move the host machine. Otherwise, a true test pattern cannot be established.
Raise the broom. Back up the machine away from the area. Identify the test pattern.

An acceptable test pattern
Illustration 2 g00585017
An unacceptable test pattern
Check the test pattern. Dimension (A) of the test pattern should be a uniform 51 to 152 mm (2 to 6 inch) across the length of the broom.

(1) T handle quick pin (2) Height adjustment handle (3) Height indicatorIf necessary to adjust the height of the broom, pull the T handle quick pin (1) and push or pull on the height adjustment handle (2) to move the height indicator (3) up or down one notch. Use the mounting bolt as a reference for the notch. Repeat on the opposite side of the broom.Note: No bolts need loosened for the adjustment procedure.Note: Do not adjust the broom height with the tilt cylinders of the host machine. Uneven wear of the bristles and premature wear of the bristles can occur.Replacement
Bristles should be replaced when the outer diameter has changed from 660 mm (26 inch) when new, to 460 mm (18 inch) when worn. The exposed bristle length is 200 mm (8 inch) when new, and 100 mm (4 inch) when worn.
Remove four motor mount screws. Retain hardware for reinstallation. Remove the motor mount.
Detach four bearing mount screws from the side plate. Retain hardware for reinstallation.
Lift the sweeper body, leaving core on the ground.
Remove the core hat plate. Retain hardware for reinstallation.
Remove old brush sections.
Install new brush sections performing the following procedures:
